From the streets of Accra to Chicago I’m inspired by how naturally we are just beautiful, I’m inspired by the simple things like the brown lip liner and gloss combination to our hair. My biggest beauty inspiration would have to be Halle Berry. I’m also inspired by Dorothy Dandridge; both women contribute to my unique experience as a Black feminine energy in the entertainment world and in my personal life. Their creativity, intelligence, strength and resilience to persevere regardless of circumstance inspire me so much. To me they represent beautiful black feminine class, a rare art form. My beauty inspiration has always been Tamara Dobson. Her beauty was imposing and commanding especially in her role in the blaxploitation movie Cleopatra Jones (1973), where she played a ‘kickass’ government agent. Beauty for me is not just facial but physical (how you carry yourself) and for me, the stronger the better. As I think of the businesswoman I want to be, I admire Sara Spencer Washington. She was not only a hairdresser but a business mogul that had several ventures in which she continued to pay it forward and uplift her community. As I continue to build my own legacy, I want to ensure that I am not only thinking about myself but the future generations to follow. I hope with my efforts we create a more inclusive beauty community. Cicely Tyson is one of my biggest style inspirations. She exuded grace, confidence, and timeless beauty. Her choices became revolutionary for the culture. She shaved her head for her very first live TV role to stay true to the character she portrayed. She would later opt to keep her cropped cut for her role in East Side / West Side which in return sparked a nationwide hair movement. Women around the world opted to rock the cropped ‘Cicely Tyson Cut.’ As art imitates life, I had the honor of working alongside my beautiful friend Sanaa Lathan as she shaved her head for the film Nappily Ever After. I will always be inspired by Ms Cicely Tyson.”

I actually used eye liner and eye color to create this look—don’t be stifled by prescribed uses for makeup. Have fun and use a green (or purple, or blue) liner and shadow on your lips. To create dark, metallic-green lips, Barose lined and filled in model Nenna’s lips with dark green eyeliner (Armani Smooth Silk Eye Pencil in 6) then added metallic green liquid eyeshadow, the Armani Eye Tint in Scarab, on the center of her lips, with a bit of the green on center of the eyelids to tie it all together.
